When we think about digestion we usually think about it starting in our stomach. It actually starts in the brain. To properly digest our food we need to be in a ‘rest & digest’ versus ‘fight or flight’ state of mind. Fight or flight is very useful when we have to run from a lion but hinders us if we are trying to digest food and nourish our bodies. Our brain needs time to sense the food through sights, smells, and even thoughts. This allows it to prepare the cascade of events necessary for the breakdown and absorption of what we eat. So, in order for our digestive system to properly function try to be in a calm state before (and during) your next meal. Sit, relax, take in the sights and smells, and enjoy!
